A member of Business in the Community. The Prince's Responsible Business Network.
Social Responsibility can be explained quite simply; it is doing the right thing.
Responsible businesses don't just focus on the bottom line, they invest in people, products and services that meet future needs - and do so without compromising long-term business, environmental and social sustainability.
As a mutual organisation, our principle focus is our members and policyholders but it is inherent in our business model that we have responsible policies for our staff, customers and the community.
We have various initiatives in place to ensure Wesleyan continues to be a responsible corporate citizen such as:
- an Apprenticeship Scheme designed and offered to act as an alternative route into a financial services career for young adults
- an active programme of fundraising events that support numerous staff-nominated initiatives throughout the year
- an extensive recycling programme, with recycling points and low energy lighting throughout our Head Office
- a point-of-sale software system, which means all sales are conducted electronically rather than on paper
Since it was launched, Wesleyan Charity Advisory Committee (previously Wesleyan Charitable Trust) has made donations totalling in excess of £1.25 million in support of various good causes.
Our employees are also regularly involved in personal charity fundraising through the year, which Wesleyan then matches in terms of contributions.
We are currently supporting Birmingham Children's Hospital as our chosen staff charity in a bid to raise as much money as possible in support of their vital work and during 2013 we donated over £80,000 through various fund raising activities.
We have also made donations to a range of other good causes including Clic Sargent, Marie Curie, BBC Children in Need appeal, Red Nose Day, Alzheimer's Society, Association of Wheelchair Children, Norman Laud Association and Children Fire and Burns Trust.
