Internet Banking security
At Wesleyan Bank, we are committed to ensuring that your banking experience is as safe and secure as possible. However, there are a number of steps you can take to minimise any risks when managing your accounts online.
How to protect yourself
Phishing
Phishing is the term given to fraudulent emails requesting customers to divulge personal and financial information. The sender can often look very genuine and be posing as a company which the customer has an existing relationship with. Receiving such emails will cause no problems to your email account or computer, but they should never be replied to or any requests actioned. We would never ask customers to log on via a link from an email. If you are concerned about any emails you receive regarding your Wesleyan accounts, please contact us immediately.
Firewall
A firewall is designed to sit between your computer and the internet to reduce unauthorised access from outside sources. We recommend your firewall is updated regularly. Some applications contain built in firewalls and some sites offer free downloads for you to install. If you have any queries on this, please contact your internet service provider.
Anti-virus and anti-spyware software
This software protects your computer from viruses which are often transmitted via external sources such as advertisements and attachments. Your anti-virus and anti-spyware software should be set up to scan files as they are received and updated regularly to minimise all possible threats.
Wireless networks
If you use a wireless laptop to go online, you will need to refer to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure that you use it securely. All wireless connections need to be password protected to ensure others cannot access your network.
Software updates
You should ensure that you regularly update all software packages you use with the latest versions, to ensure optimum safety and security. Depending on what you use, you may receive information on updates direct to your computer, or many can be downloaded from the relevant website.
Public and shared computers
It is always better to use your own computer for your banking. However, if you do not have this facility it is very important to ensure that the computer you use is equipped with an up-to-date firewall plus anti-virus and anti-spyware software. We would also recommend that you do not use computers that are in the general public domain, such as internet cafes.
How we protect you
High level encryption
Our online banking system adopts 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer encryption which provides industry standard levels of security and ensures that your data cannot be read by anyone else.
Security certificate
All reputable websites should contain evidence of a certificate from a recognised body demonstrating that they are safe and secure for users. For Wesleyan Bank this is provided by Verisign and further details can be accessed from their website.
Firewalls and monitoring tools
We utilise both firewalls and monitoring tools on the network where our internet banking system resides. This ensures that there is no unauthorised access.
Secure messaging
This enables you to send and receive secure emails from within www.wesleyanbankonline.co.uk
Regular testing
This is completed to ensure that our site has the highest levels of security possible and to prevent the infiltration of viruses.
Logging on
Whenever you log in, you will be prompted to select 3 random characters from the memorable data you provided when you first began using internet banking. This prevents others from identifying your password and gaining access to your online account.
Logging off
As a safety measure, if you visit our site and are inactive for 10 minutes, your session will expire. If you make three consecutive attempts to log on using invalid passwords, usernames or memorable data your account will be suspended. To reset your account details you will need to contact the bank on 0800 358 1122 or email at enq@wesleyan.co.uk
Should have require further information on any of the above points, or have any queries regarding online safety and security measures for Wesleyan Bank please contact enq@wesleyan.co.uk or call 0800 358 1122.
