British Medical Association (BMA) sets up network for GP trainers

The British Medical Association (BMA) is to set up a GP trainers' network in a bid to raise GP trainers' pay.

The BMA said it was "concerned" that GP trainers were "not properly rewarded" for their work, and that the new network will serve to place more effective pressure on the DDRB (Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body) regarding pay.

The network, which will represent the views of GP trainers, will spring from a database of around 1,500 GP trainers in the UK.

Members of the network will elect 19 GP trainers to represent them in their geographical area.

The BMA said it had pressed the DDRB for an increase in GP trainers' grants but so far to no avail.

Dr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the GP's committee said: "We are now setting up a GP trainers' network and so are inviting interested doctors to stand for election to represent their local constituents."

He added: "With increased involvement of grass roots GP trainers the BMA will be much better placed to put further pressure on the DDRB and Health Departments to improve pay and conditions for GP trainers."

The network will operate as a virtual, electronic group.
