Many junior doctors could be out of work in 2 months

A report has been published by a doctors' campaign group alleging that hundreds of junior doctors could find themselves out of work in February.

Remedy UK carried out a survey of senior house officers (SHOs) in south-east England and found that a third of them will be out of work in two months' time, the Guardian reports.

February and August are the two months of the year when junior doctors traditionally switch jobs, spending between six months and a year at each post they fill.

However, cuts in available jobs for doctors and a large number of candidates applying for a limited number of posts has reportedly led to an increased risk of medics finding themselves unable to move onto another position.

The Guardian quotes Matt Jameson Evans, an orthopaedic SHO and co-founder of Remedy UK, as saying: "Thousands of doctors will be without jobs in February.

"These are people with children and mortgages who are facing Christmas knowing they will have no kind of income at all in February."

Responding to the suggestion that 124 trainee surgeons will be without a job in February and this ratio will apply across the whole country, the BMA argued that it was inaccurate as surgery in the south-east is highly competitive and SHOs could have better chances elsewhere.
