Medical students given new loan options
People applying for university may be able to fill in their student loan forms at the same time if Government plans are accepted.
Universities secretary John Denham said that the idea was to give students, including medical students, more time to plan their finances and try to allay fears about student debt, the Times reports.
"We want to have a system where you can formally apply for your student finance at the same time as sending off your Universities and Colleges Admissions Service form," he said.
The move would work in partnership with another that enables A-level students to apply for university upon receiving their results.
Mr Denham said he expected the new system to be in place from 2012.
The Queen announced in her speech this week that the government intends to sell off part of the student loan portfolio.
This is currently worth about £18 billion, potentially rising to £55 billion in the next ten years.
