'Record highs' for medical student debt
Medical student debt has risen to unprecedented levels according to a recent study by a health union.
Unison found that those studying medicine at university have debts of £7,012 on average and 22 per cent now have debts worth more than £10,000, according to StaffNurse.com.
The majority of the students polled were trainee nurses and midwifes, although a further 132 of the 659 were involved in other types of medicine.
Commenting on a ten per cent increase in the number of medical students now having to work in order to make ends meet, Unison spokesperson Gail Adams said: "Students are fully aware that taking on additional paid work has a detrimental effect on their studies, but bursary funding leaves them with no choice."
