North 'bearing brunt of job cuts'

Public sector job cuts have hit northern regions of England particularly hard, a new study suggests.

In the past 12 months alone, more than 175,000 public sector jobs have been axed in Yorkshire and the Humber, the North West, the North East and the Midlands, according to Centre for Cities.

With the Government's deficit reduction plan causing uncertainty among workers, some might be using their savings accounts to try to give themselves a financial safety net.

The research group's study found that 40,000 public service jobs have gone in the East of England in the last year.

Despite its findings, the organisation added that certain UK regions have actually experienced a rise in public sector employment levels in recent times.

It said this trend has been witnessed in London, the South East, Wales and Scotland.

Job cuts are not restricted to the public sector, as Centre for Cities added that the West Midlands, Wales, the South West and Scotland have all seen reductions in private sector employment.
