ABI launches critical illness guide consultation

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that its new critical illness insurance guide will improve clarity for customers.

It has launched a consultation on the guide, which includes the definitions of the main conditions covered and is designed to help consumers understand the nature of critical illness cover.

The ABI is seeking views from insurers, financial advisers, charities and any other organisation with an interest in critical illness insurance.

Nick Kirwan, head of health and protection insurance, said: "This guide builds on the work we've already done to make definitions of illnesses clearer.

"Ultimately, all our initiatives are geared towards increasing the number of claims that are paid."

The consultation continues until September 28, after which the guide will be submitted to the Plain English Campaign to obtain a Crystal Mark.

According to the ABI's statement of best practice, plain English should always be used in critical illness product information to aid customer understanding.
