NASUWT comments on raising school leaving age
NASUWT has spoken out on proposals to increase the school leaving age in the UK.
Reasons for the changes, which involve raising the leaving age from 16 to 18 were complimented by the teaching union who said that the rationale behind them was "undoubtedly right"
However, the body said that whether the new scheme will work will depend upon employers who so far have an "unimpressive" record in creating training opportunities.
Spokesperson for NASUWT Chris Keates said: "By far the greatest challenge will be to secure the cooperation of the employers to provide the quantity and quality of training opportunities.
"The Government's proposals will stand or fall on this issue alone."
Mr Keates also said that changes to the law probably will not change the mindsets of teenagers who do not want to go into higher education.
NASUWT was founded in 1975 and represents approximately 265,000 teachers and headteachers.
