Sales for Wesleyan's charity children's book are 'Unstoppable'!

A new children's book published to raise money for Birmingham Children's Hospital has sold more than 4,000 copies at its launch gala dinner.

'The Unstoppable Maggie McGee' has been published by Wesleyan, the Birmingham-based financial mutual, as part of its campaign to raise £750,000 for the hospital's Magnolia House appeal.

Businesses from across the city joined Wesleyan in not only buying copies to give to their employees and their families, but also ensuring every library in Birmingham will receive one of the first editions. In all, more than £40,000 was raised on the night.

Guests heard author Juliet Clare Bell explain how the story developed before 13-year-old Callum Reid, the inspiration for the main character Maggie McGee, read the book to a rapt audience.

Illustrated by Coventry artist Dave Gray, the book tells the story of Maggie and her best friend Sol as they use their imaginations to escape the confines of the hospital to go on adventures.

Wesleyan's charity fundraiser Jessica Wilkes-Reading said: "The level of support the book has received is phenomenal and we're excited that people will now finally be able to own a copy.

"Being able to put a copy into every library in Birmingham is something very special and we can't thanks the city's businesses enough for their generosity."

Wesleyan is Birmingham Children's Hospital largest corporate donor, and has supported the charity since 2013.

Since then it has raised more than £250,000 for the hospital's Cancer Centre Appeal and is leading the £1 million campaign for Magnolia House, a purpose built facility in the grounds of the city centre hospital that will provide a haven for families after they have received very upsetting or life-changing news.
