Wesleyan CEO receives Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University

Wesleyan Chief Executive Craig Errington has received an Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University in recognition of his contribution to the finance sector.

He received the award during the graduation ceremony for the university's Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences at Birmingham's Symphony Hall.

Speaking after the ceremony, Craig said: "Birmingham City University is one of the city's finest educational establishments and I am delighted to receive this award.

"The university has a thriving business school and the work they do in preparing students, giving them a vital sense of innovation and inspiration, is essential to the development of businesses in the UK.

Mr Craig Errington, BCU Honorary Doctorate"It was an honour to be given the opportunity to talk to the graduates as they embark on their careers. I wanted to explain to them that there are always opportunities in business, even in the toughest of times."

Using Wesleyan as an example, he explained its mutual status meant that during the recession it was able to make long term decisions while other companies had to react to short term circumstances.

"Many organisations reacted to satisfy the market and made decisions because the market expected them to do so," he said. "As a mutual we were able to make the right choices based on the needs of our customers rather than bow
to pressures from shareholders."

Craig, who was named National IoD Director of the Year in 2011, has been Chief Executive of the Birmingham-based mutual for ten years.

During that time Wesleyan has grown significantly in its specialist markets of doctors, dentists, lawyers and teachers, and has seen its assets under management grow to more than £6 billion with operating profits in 2014 of £40.3 million.
