New awards established to celebrate a century of women in medicine

Wesleyan, the specialist financial mutual for doctors, is joining forces with the Medical Women's Federation (MWF) to sponsor three awards to mark the organisation's centenary.

Female doctors around the country have been asked to nominate themselves or a colleague for the awards that will recognise one senior doctor, one established doctor and one up-and-coming doctor for their contributions to the sector.

Winners of each category will receive £250 and a year's subscription to the MWF. Applications close on 7 April, with the winners announced at the Anniversary Dinner in London on 13 May.

Vicki Wentworth, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at Wesleyan, said: "We are really proud to be supporting the MWF in its centenary year and to help recognise the brightest and best female contributors to the medical profession in the UK.

"Wesleyan itself has been helping medical professionals with their finances for more than 100 years. This is a great partnership and I'm looking forward to seeing the entries and recognising these women's amazing achievements."

Professor Parveen Kumar, president of the Medical Women's Federation and a member of Wesleyan's Members Advisory Board, said: "Celebrating 100 years is a real landmark achievement for us. We're proud of all the progress we've made and this couldn't have been achieved without the support of the thousands of women doctors who have worked with us over decades.

"That's why we want to give something back to women doctors. We hope this event unites and empowers the women of the profession, to drive us forward towards achieving another 100 years of success."

The UK's women doctors are also invited to the Medical Women's Federation's (MWF) anniversary event to celebrate 100 years of women in medicine. The event, which will take place between 10 and 13 May in London.

Guests will be able to attend a series of lectures and receptions held over three days. Speakers include representatives from Royal Society of Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and British Medical Association.

The MWF is a charity supporting medical women who face personal and professional issues associated with their gender. As the largest representative body of women doctors in the UK, the MWF is frequently consulted by the Department of Health on issues affecting women doctors.
