Million-pound funding pot available for new applications.

Charities and community groups have received more than £300,000 in grants awarded by the Wesleyan Foundation in its first six months.

The Foundation was set up by financial services mutual, Wesleyan, to give up to £1 million a year to good causes and is administered by the Heart of England Community Foundation.

Groups can apply for three levels of funding including small grants of £2,000 and under; medium-sized awards of between £2,000 and £10,000, and discretionary large grants of more than £10,000.

Charities that have received funding over the past six months include Brandwood Community Centre, Birmingham, which hired two new staff members to support a debt advice service, a Leeds Downs Syndrome group, which is set to open a new cafe and Nottingham-based Broxtowe Youth Homelessness, which used the funding to launch a drop-in service.

Vicki Wentworth, Wesleyan's Chief Customer Officer said: "The Wesleyan Foundation was set up because we wanted to show our commitment to helping those in our communities in need of support.

As a mutual, we also wanted to give our customers a chance to get involved so we've been asking them to nominate causes that are important to them and to get involved in the voting process for larger grants.

"We're delighted with the difference we've been able to make already and we're excited about the difference we're going to be able to make in the long-term."

Tina Costello, CEO of the Heart of England Charity Foundation said: "Funding in the voluntary sector has reduced dramatically in recent years so it's fantastic that Wesleyan is now providing financial support on this scale through its Foundation."

"The Wesleyan Foundation has been hugely welcomed by the voluntary sector and the many small organisations who will be able to continue providing local solutions for local needs, making a real and sustainable difference to their communities."
