A message of reassurance from our Group Chief Executive

A message of reassurance from our Group Chief Executive

We would like to offer reassurance that despite the recent falls in global stock markets, your investments are in good hands with Wesleyan.

The Chancellor's budget announcement on Wednesday was welcomed by many, but the concerns around the impact of COVID-19 paired with uncertainty around oil prices have meant that financial markets remain volatile.

Our Investments team continue to monitor the situation closely and are buying shares that should benefit your investments over the long term.

Our award-winning Investments Team

Our in-house Investments team, which includes our highly experienced Fund Managers, look for opportunities that arise during periods of market volatility.

They take a 'counter-cyclical' approach, which basically means moving in a different direction to the markets by identifying out-of-favour equities with a long-term potential to grow in value.

This means that on days when markets are down, our Fund Managers are more likely to be buying equities - not selling them, with the aim of increasing the potential returns for our members and customers over the long term.

Our Investments team's performance record and commitment to excellence has resulted in them winning a wide range of industry awards and accolades and most recently they were named "Investment Team of the Year" at the Insurance Asset Risk Awards 2020.

Trusting in Wesleyan and our financial strength

Wesleyan's financial strength remains one of the highest in the industry, meaning we have capital reserves significantly above those required of us by the regulator and therefore we are in a better position when faced with equity market volatility.

While past performance is no guarantee of future performance, over time, our strongest historical fund performance has come from the companies we invested in during market dips similar to those we have seen in the last three weeks.

Over the longer term we believe our approach and experience in investing for the long-term will benefit those we serve as a mutual organisation.

Mutually beneficial

Being part of a successful mutual means members, rather than shareholders, get to benefit from our success. In 2019 we contributed £1.4m towards member discounts and used our financial strength to boost the returns of our With Profits Open Fund investors to the tune of £28m. These are just a few of the benefits of investing with Wesleyan.

In conclusion, I want to thank you for your ongoing trust in Wesleyan and our award-winning investments team. We are doing all we can during uncertain times to create brighter financial futures for all of our customers.
