Elective Competition Winner 2017

Meet Conor McCloskey a dental student and one of the winners of our Wesleyan Elective Competition 2017. Here he shares with us his elective experience in Cambodia.

Dental elective - What lies ahead

My name is Conor McCloskey and I'm a fourth year dental student at the University of Dundee. I started organising my elective a few months ago but it didn't feel real until I paid the travel agent in April (goodbye student loan!).

I decided to go to Cambodia to work with a charity called one-2-one, who provide medical and dental care for people in remote areas who have difficulty accessing those services.

Building up a good rapport with your elective supervisor, from the get go, is essential to get all of the information you need before you go on your elective. I like to think that I'm fairly organised but you have a huge checklist to keep on top of before you even think about boarding that aeroplane! From immunisations to risk assessments and many emails in between, you are definitely kept busy.

I'm travelling with a few people in my year and we are planning on doing restorative and paediatric dentistry as well as oral surgery while we are in Cambodia. The aim is to return to dental school in fifth year and feel a lot more confident in different areas of dentistry, which is what most of us aim to do with our electives.

I also think it will be really interesting to see how dentistry is carried out in an area of the world that has very different facilities and practices than what we are lucky to have here in the UK.

I intend to take loads of photos to document my trip and will no doubt have to clear some space on my phone to make some room for what's to come.

The photo is from last summer just before an airline that will remain unnamed lost my luggage (Praying for better luck this time!). I've never travelled this far from home before in my life and I don't know what to expect but what I do know is that this will be the experience of a lifetime and I can't wait to share it!
