Jess' Blog No.5 - Day 2 A brief update

Wesleyan's CR and Charity Coordinator Jessica Wilkes-Reading has left Addis Ababa and moved on to Mekelle, the capital city of the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia.

A full blog will be online shortly, but here's a brief update...

Jess spent Tuesday at Ayder Referral Hospital in Mekelle and saw at first hand the conditions doctors and patients face in Ethiopia.

She said: "There are so many things we take for granted and being here is my wake up call to so much.

"They rub babies in butter as they have no moisturiser. I heard about a 15-year-old girl in the Intensive Care Unit who had a stillbirth, then suffered a pulmonary embolism from the stress and strain. Just harrowing.

"People walk four hours to get to the hospital and the families move in if they have someone in intensive care. I saw small tents all around the hospital inside where people live to be near their loved ones."

However, despite all their hardships, the locals are proving to be incredibly generous and hospitable to Jess and the team, welcoming them warmly wherever they go.

They were honoured to be invited to a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. This is an integral part of the social and cultural life in the country, and an invitation is considered to be a mark of friendship and respect.
