Meet the Team

Meet the Team

Wesleyan has a long history of supporting our customers with their charitable activities and earlier this year Jane Innes-Rees, a retired dentist, gave us a chance to support her and a cause close to her heart in a different way.

Jane has been a Wesleyan customer for many years, and since her retirement she has been working in Ethiopia setting up dental units in the hospital and university in Mekelle in the Tigray area of the country, as well as supporting Elshadai Children's Village.

Jane was invited to Wesleyan head office to meet with Jessica Wilkes-Reading, CR and Charity Coordinator to give an insight in to the work she was doing to see if there was any other ways Wesleyan could get involved.

Jessica has recently taken on the responsibility of looking after the Society's corporate responsibility, and saw an opportunity to use this project as a kick start to engage with customers and staff in new ways.

During the meeting, Jane talked animatedly about the causes she supports, from teaching mothers to sew hospital scrubs to sell and having breakfast with children who are being taught to ride and maintain bikes, to a chance meeting in a coffee shop with the Dean of the University who asked her to set up a dental clinic for them.

Jane's enthusiasm was infectious and after the meeting she extended an invitation to Jessica to join her in November to visit the hospital, university and the children's village and share her expertise of charity fundraising, grants, funding and governance of charities with the committee from Elshadai and supporting them to explore new ways of income generation.

Jessica will also be exploring ways in which redundant dental equipment from the UK can support education in countries such as Ethiopia and how Wesleyan could be the catalyst for starting such a project.

As well as Jane and Jessica, there will also be a number of medical professionals from SHARE Sheffield heading out to the region (http://www.sharesheffield.org.uk/).

SHARE act as an international health link between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Mekelle in Tigray, operating with charitable objectives.

Their aim is to improve the healthcare system in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia, by working with the Tigray Health board and local hospitals to achieve this.

Wesleyan is delighted to be able to support Jane and SHARE, and we look forward to exploring many opportunities for support with them in the future.
