Member of Wesleyan's Advisory Board awarded OBE for services to general practice

Dr John Gillies, a member of the Wesleyan Members Advisory Board (WMAB), has received an OBE in the New Year's Honours List.

John, a former chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Scotland, received his honour for services to general practice.

Dr John Gillies OBE border He is the current deputy director of the Scottish School of Primary Care and was chairman of RCGP Scotland from 2010 to 2014, during which time he was vocal in calls to increase funding for general practice.

 He said: "I'm proud to accept this award, which I receive on behalf of all the hard working GP officers and staff of RCGP in Scotland and across the UK as well as all my colleagues at Selkirk Health Centre, where I worked as Principal GP.

"This award also acknowledges the dedication and hard work of GPs across the UK who continue to provide a great service for patients despite growing problems with resourcing and recruitment."

 John is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in General Practice at the University of Edinburgh as well as a member of the University Global Health Academy.

After qualifying from Edinburgh University he worked in Africa and was a principal in general practice in Glenluce, then Selkirk, from 1985 to 2012.

John has led on the development and delivery of the Ethics in Professional Practice modules for NHS Education Scotland and has published on medical ethics, rural practice and primary care health policy.
