WANTED: Financial Consultants

By Alan Jones

WANTED: Financial Consultants

Wesleyan is on the lookout for Financial Consultants to join its ever expanding team.

Alan Jones, Managing Director for Wesleyan Financial Services, explains more about the role and what potential recruits can look forward to.

"Sending specialists out to meet customers in their homes and places of work has been central to the way Wesleyan has done business for 150 years.

"Back then we were selling industrial life assurance and were one of the first companies to develop a system where premiums were collected weekly by agents calling at policyholders' homes. This lead to the 'insurance man' being a familiar presence on the nation's doorsteps for decades to come.

"Things have moved on quite a bit since then, but the basics remain the same. We want our financial consultants (FCs) to become a familiar face to our customers around the country, to get to know them and to fully understand their financial objectives and aspirations as they progress through their lives and career."

You won't be working alone

"We currently have more than 300 FCs around the country working remotely from their homes.

"While that might sound like a lonely existence, a lot of effort goes into ensuring it isn't. Each FC is encouraged to get involved in the communities in which they work, and they are in constant contact with other members of their team and their area managers.

"We also want to make sure their infrastructure and support is right, and that starts with the Sales Relationship Centre. Based at our Birmingham head office, they liaise with the FCs, book meetings and help them manage their diaries.

"The FCs also get full support about the advice they give, so if a customer has a request they haven't encountered before, or one they haven't dealt with for a while, they can get the guidance they need.  "

Every day is different

"As you might expect, every client is different, which means every day is different.

"For example, if you come to work with our customers in the medical profession, you could be talking to a GP about Group Locum Cover one day, explaining how it works, and how much it would cost. That would very much be a discussion about their practice and business.

"Yet, the next day you could encounter a GP who wants to talk about pensions and retirement planning, and the day after that, a newly qualified doctor whose main concern is getting on the housing ladder."

Full training

"We want the right people to join us, which is why there is a robust assessment process. But we also want to make sure they're successful for themselves, the company and the business, which is why we have an academy to ensure they are fully trained to the highest standards.

"Our Academy has just been revised to make it more modular. It is no longer six weeks in a classroom learning about the intricacies of our target professions and financial advice, instead there is time out in the field, seeing how things work in reality, meeting area managers and fellow financial consultants and seeing them in action.

"New recruits get taught specific knowledge they will need to deal with our customers, learn about the heritage of the business, and everything they need to know about the products we offer."

Who are we looking for?

"We're looking for industry professionals to join our team, but that's not to say we won't consider people who are new to the world of financial advice.

"The drive, resilience and enthusiasm is often more important than a track record. And while a knowledge of financial services is beneficial, life experience is also important, as is the ability to engage with clients, understand their needs and put them at ease.

"Engaging, curious and experienced - that's what we're after. We want people who are happy challenging and contributing to the ongoing success of Wesleyan."
