Weekend Jammin'

By Harry Apperley and Joe Dorgham

After a hectic hospital week, in rolled the weekend and out rolled Harry & Joe.

Relishing the chance to explore, we mounted what turned out to be our not so reliable steed (an atypically left hand drive Toyota Camrie) and headed West. Our first stop was Mayfield Falls. Separated from MoBay by a deplorably potholed 'road' and buzzing rainforest, our journey to the river was an adventure in itself.

Rallying skills were put to one side as we gently evaded every kind of obstacle, before reaching the start of our first aqua-hike. We clambered up the spectacular vine banked river, through rapids and whirlpools.

Next, Negril. A town renowned for its hippy, laid back style in a country that already exudes relaxation. Crowned by Seven Mile Beach, it's a paradise of white sand, fresh fish and jerk shacks. Appropriately adorned in flip flops and sunglasses, we wiled away hours sunning, reading, running, throwing and catching.

However, a trip to Negril is incomplete without launching yourself from the cliffs at Rick's cafe. 'One of the world's top ten bars', Rick's boasts a stunning position atop 40 foot cliffs where locals and tourists alike find themselves with Red Stripes and brown pants as they leap into the turquoise waters below the lively bar.

Our mini break was topped off with roadside jerk chicken, barbecued to perfection inside an old oil drum that attracts custom with its plumes of delicious blue smoke. Well sunned, well fed and well relaxed, we dragged our car back to the streets of MoBay with shared reluctance.

One week down, three to go, over and out, Harry & Joe.
