Tax year-end planning for teachers

Make the most of your allowances before the 2025/26 tax year ends

Wesleyan Group is rated:

As a teacher or education leader, your income, pensions and investments can be complex. The end of the tax year is a key opportunity to make the most of your allowances and protect what you’ve worked hard to earn. With upcoming changes announced as part of the 2025 Autumn Budget, acting now could help you to keep more of your money.

Key questions to help you prepare for tax year-end

Have you maximised your pension allowances?

Pensions remain one of the most tax-efficient ways to save. You can contribute up to the annual allowance of £60,000 before the tax year ends, with the potential to carry forward any unused allowance from the previous three years.

  • For defined contribution pensions, contributions are straightforward, with government tax relief applied automatically.
  • For defined benefit schemes (like the Teachers’ Pension Scheme), things are a lot more complex. A Specialist Financial Adviser can explain how this works.

Have you used your full ISA allowance?

Your annual ISA allowance is £20,000. Unlike pensions, it cannot be carried forward - so it really is a case of "use it or lose it".

You can split your allowance across:

  • Cash ISAs
  • Stocks and shares ISAs
  • Innovative finance ISAs

Looking ahead, changes from April 2027 will limit cash ISA contributions for those under 65, making forward planning increasingly important.

Remember, the value of investments can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you invest.
