Preparing for the Autumn Budget: why it pays to play the waiting game
On the 26th November, the Autumn Budget will be announced. While there’s no confirmation of what’s to come, we are seeing a lot of speculation in the press:
“The upcoming Budget is creating more uncertainty for medical professionals already grappling with complex pension rules, frozen thresholds and rising taxes.” says Alec Collie, Head of Medical.
“The continued uncertainty about what lies ahead in the next 12 months, let alone at retirement, risks driving experienced GPs out of the profession at a time when the NHS can least afford to lose them. What’s needed from this Budget is clarity, stability and a tax system that rewards, rather than penalises, those working harder to keep patients cared for.”
While these issues may be a cause of concern for many medical professionals, it’s important to remember that acting on impulse is never the right approach.
Why it pays to play the waiting game
While you may be tempted to get ahead of the Budget and make decisions based on the rumours, there’s no guarantee that what is speculated will be part of the Budget.
If you’re itching to do something, researching the topics that are being speculated could help you understand the potential impact on your financial plans.
This is also a good time to review your finances, looking at both your short-term and long-term plans while deep diving into your income, savings, investments and pensions. Having a robust strategy is what allows you to adapt when needed, not when panic sets in.
What to do when changes are announced
Once the chancellor delivers the Budget, the window for opportunity opens. This is where you can see what the proposed changes mean for you and put together a plan of action.
It’s worth noting that many policies and proposals take time to implement, so you don’t need to have all the answers straight away. Take the time to sit down with your financial adviser and figure out what you need to do to protect your wealth and your future plans.
