New intake of apprentices hired by Wesleyan

Wesleyan has welcomed another team of apprentices, giving them opportunities in a variety of financial services roles.

The nine new recruits will be based at the mutual's Birmingham head office in the heart of the city centre. During the 18-month scheme they will progress towards an NVQ Level 3 or 4, with support from Birmingham Metropolitan College.

Vicki Wentworth, Wesleyan's Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, said: "Developing up-and-coming talent has been something that's always been important to Wesleyan, and we're looking forward to seeing how this year's intake grow in their new roles.

"It's important to provide alternative routes into a financial services career as going to university and getting a degree doesn't suit everyone and, for many roles, isn't always necessary."

This year's intake of apprentices are the first who have been able to select which department they would like to work in. They include corporate audit, actuarial and risk teams, with one even working with the chief executive's support team.

More than 60 apprentices have joined the company over the past eight years, with the scheme being recognised by the recent Birmingham Post Business Awards, where Wesleyan won the Contribution to the Community Award and Business of the Year.

Emily Palgrave, who will be working in an internal communications role, said: "I had studied business related subjects at sixth form, which I really enjoyed and from that I knew I wanted to carry on in a similar area.

"I was looking for an apprenticeship and I knew Wesleyan's scheme offered lots of opportunities, so over the next 18 months I aim to build my skills, gain experience and start a successful career."
