Surgery Insurance - Coronavirus Update

Business interruption

In light of the recent outbreak of Coronavirus, we understand that you will be concerned about the potential impact of business interruption and the level of protection.  We appreciate that it's a difficult time for many and so it's important to make the situation clear with regards to your cover.

Most commercial insurance policies are designed to cover standard risks and are therefore unlikely to provide cover for the effects of global pandemics, such as Covid-19.  Some businesses may have extended their cover to include "Notifiable Disease" however as Covid-19 was unknown until recently, it's unlikely to be identified on the list of "Notifiable Diseases".  Therefore, there is no cover for loss of income if a business cannot operate due to Coronavirus.

The reason being is that insurers set pricing to cover against a wide range of standard risks such as fire, flood, losses by theft and specific listed outbreaks pertaining to a specific surgery, rather than setting pricing for wide-scale outbreaks affecting all industries and sectors.

We appreciate that this is a very challenging and uncertain time for many individuals and businesses.  We will continue to monitor the situation and advise accordingly.
