First Premium anniversary

First Premium anniversary

Friday, 27 August 1841 was a historic day

Not only did Prime Minister Viscount Melbourne lose a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons, leading him to resign three days later, it was also the day Wesleyan collected its first premium.

It's not known who took out that first premium 175 years ago, but it's believed it wasn't numbered '#1'. As a way to make new companies like ours appear more established and successful than they actually were, the first invoices and premium numbers would have often have been given higher numbers to make it look as if they had more customers and suppliers!

Nevertheless, the growth of the Society had begun, with that small group of Wesleyan churchgoers continuing to sell more and more policies to the industrial workers of Birmingham before spreading out to surrounding towns and cities in the subsequent years.
