Read all about it! BookBenches coming to Birmingham!!

Wesleyan is leading the way with another high profile charity campaign this summer, encouraging young people to read while helping raise money for Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The Big Read follows on from last year's Big Hoot, which saw a parliament of owl statues descend onto the streets of Birmingham and beyond . This year more than 170 BookBench sculptures will appear around the city, decorated with characters from famous children's books.

The arts project is being used to promote literacy development, and will be launched with a weekend of activities at the Library of Birmingham with a CBBC Live event, allowing visitors to meet some of their favourite CBBC presenters and children's authors.

Birmingham Children's Hospital, which has been Wesleyan's Chosen Charity since 2013, is the charity partner for the Big Read project.

Liz McKenzie, Chief Operating Officer at Wesleyan and Chair of its Charity Advisory Committee, said, "Reading is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It can educate and entertain, ground you in reality or whisk you off into a fantastical adventure.

"We hope everyone enjoys the BookBench Trail and takes a moment to sit down on one of them, pull out a book and enjoy the pleasure of reading, whether it's an old favourite or a new discovery."

One of the BookBenches at the Library of Birmingham will feature 'The Unstoppable Maggie McGee', the children's book Wesleyan published to raise money for Birmingham Children's Hospital's Magnolia House Appeal.

Artist Dave Gray, who illustrated the book working alongside author Juliet Clare Bell, will be putting the finishing touches to it on live on Blue Peter during the CBBC Live weekend.

Since launching the appeal in March 2015, in partnership with Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH), Wesleyan has donated over £630,000.

The Big Read BookBench trail will be in Birmingham from 16 July until 13 September. CBBC's Awesome Authors weekend will be at the Library of Birmingham and Centenary Square on Saturday, 16 July and Sunday, 17 July.
