Recently qualified Dentist receives magic touch from Wesleyan


Dr Jonathan Westall was blessed with natural talent from an early age but his success owes as much to his determination to achieve the highest standards in everything he does.

Classically trained in piano and saxophone from the age of five, the versatile musician has performed in world class venues such as The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

In 2002, Jonathan embarked on a new chapter as a professional close-up magician while studying Medicine at the University of Manchester, which saw him provide entertainment services at private, corporate and charity functions alongside world-class peers from The Magic Circle.

Upon graduation, he initially held a variety of medical positions working for NHS Trusts and a leading cruise line, however his decision to study Dentistry at King's College London ignited a new passion in his career.

"As I progressed through my course I became gripped by how fascinating modern dentistry is, from new clinical innovations to all aspects of managing a business specialising in patient care.

I originally wanted to become a facial surgeon but after speaking to my tutors my goal became to run my own dental practice," explains Jonathan Westall.

The challenge

After graduating with a degree in Dentistry, Jonathan completed his foundation training and gained valuable experience working for a dental practice in London. Following a meticulous search across the UK, he subsequently discovered a long established dental practice that was available to buy.

Jonathan's initial euphoria on identifying his dream business quickly subsided when he was given four weeks to secure a loan to progress the purchase.

Despite approaching over 20 financial lenders for assistance, he was turned away due to his perceived lack of experience and element of risk as a recently qualified dentist.

"Most lenders' criteria required me to be a graduate with a minimum of five years' experience and my background in medicine was not taken into consideration at all.

Being rejected due to falling outside of a set policy without having the opportunity to have a meaningful conversation was a frustrating experience," says Jonathan.

The solution

Seemingly devoid of options, Jonathan recalled his time as a junior doctor when he met representatives from Wesleyan, one of the UK's leading financial services providers dedicated to offering tailored advice and solutions to professions. A speculative enquiry resulted in an immediate response.

The company was able to provide a six-figure loan over a period of 20 years with affordable monthly repayments to enable Jonathan to purchase Halton Road Dental Practice - a three surgery, predominantly NHS practice in Runcorn, Cheshire with a patient base of over 17,000. In addition, surgery insurance cover to protect the dental practice against the loss, or damage to its building and contents, including interruption to the business or loss of income cover was sourced by Wesleyan's General Insurance division who carefully selected an appropriate policy from a selected range of providers.
